Protesters in Brussels have found a new way to show their displeasure: squirting milk straight from a cow at riot police. Farmers angered by collapsing milk prices demonstrated, pelting police with bottles and chickens and spraying officers with milk directly from a cow’s udders. Over 2,500 farmers from across the EU blockaded the area outside the European Union’s headquarters, burning tires and hay outside an emergency meeting of farm ministers. The jittery cow, frightened by firecrackers, sprang loose and chased an office worker down the street.

A 25-year-old laborer from the village of Sheikh Eissa in southern Egypt cut off his own penis on Sunday in protest at his parents’ choice of bride. The man, who had also mutilated his testicles, was taken to hospital in stable condition. He was in love with a woman but his parents rejected her and told him to marry another woman he didn’t want. He took a knife and cut off his penis in his room. Doctors were unable to reattach the severed member.

Animal rights activist wearing lettuce and cabbages instead of cloths to promote vegetarianism in Manila. Beautiful ladies in green.

Indonesian timber baron has walked away from illegal logging charges, prompting an outcry from environmentalists. The release of Adelin Lis undermines moves by Indonesia for the United Nations climate change conference in Bali to back a multi-billion-dollar program to prevent deforestation. Teenagers protest by coloring their body green and and wrapping themselves in leaves and twigs.

An eco-protester breached security at the British Museum to put face masks on exhibits from the Chinese Terracotta Army. The man jumped barriers to place the masks bearing the slogan “CO2 emission polluter” on two of the life-sized figures to highlight China’s poor pollution record.

Connecticut eighth grader Patrick Abbazia attended classes wrapped in duct tape to protest his East Shore Midddle School’s “no touching” policy. East Shore principal Catherine Williams had sent home a letter telling parents that “physical contact is prohibited to keep all students safe in the learning environment.” The announcement was prompted by an incident in which a student required medical attention after being kicked in the groin, but the letter specifically banned “hugging” and “horseplay” as well. Williams said she was “only concerned about unsafe behaviors,” but Abbazia claimed teachers had told him that high-fives and pats on the back were out of bounds as well.

The Triangle Shirtwaist Company always kept its doors locked to ensure that the young immigrant women stayed stooped over their machines and didn’t steal anything. When a fire broke out on Saturday, March 25, 1911, on the eighth floor of the New York City factory, the locks sealed the workers’ fate. In just 30 minutes, 146 were killed. Witnesses thought the owners were tossing their best fabric out the windows to save it, then realized workers were jumping, sometimes after sharing a kiss (the scene can be viewed now as an eerie precursor to the World Trade Center events of September, 11, 2001, only a mile and a half south). The Triangle disaster spurred a national crusade for workplace safety.

This year 20th September happens to be the Software Freedom Day, one of the most important day in software calander. For those unaware, let me briefly tell you the importance of this day.
Software Freedom Day(SFD) is an annual worldwide celebration of free/open-source software. SFD is a public education effort, not only to celebrate the virtues of free/open-source software, but also to encourage its use, to the benefit of the public.[1]
Software Freedom Day was established in 2004 and was first observed on August 28, 2004 when over 70 teams participated. Since that time it has grown in popularity as more than 300 teams from over 60 countries celebrated on the second SFD, held on September 10, 2005. The primary sponsor for 2005-2006 was Canonical Ltd., the company behind Ubuntu, a GNU/Linux distribution.[1]
We too celebrated the Software Freedom Day in NIT, Durgapur. It was a celebration marked by the installation of GNU/Linux and bringing awareness among students. It was Computer Science Lab that was going free and open this time.
At 10 AM we gathered at the Computer Science Lab. We began the celebration by showing a happy birthday video from comedian Stephan Fry, as this year happens to be the 25th anniversary of GNU. This is one must watch video. Then followed a short and interesting presentation on FLOSS/OSS which was given by Biswas Parajuli and Raj Agrawal. The basic purpose of the presentation was to bring awareness among novice.
Then came the practical implementation of all these, Installation. We decided to install a lightweight distro Fluxbuntu. The responsibility of installation was shared among all present there, especially Sushil Pandey and Vignesh Prabhu. I would love to share some of the pictures which were captured during the celebrations.
While preparing for the slides i came across some really interesting sites which i would like to share with you.

How Life Begins
In 1957 he began taking pictures with an endoscope, an instrument that can see inside a body cavity, but when Lennart Nilsson presented the rewards of his work to LIFE’s editors several years later, they demanded that witnesses confirm that they were seeing what they thought they were seeing. Finally convinced, they published a cover story in 1965 that went on for 16 pages, and it created a sensation. Then, and over the intervening years, Nilsson’s painstakingly made pictures informed how humanity feels about . . . well, humanity. They also were appropriated for purposes that Nilsson never intended. Nearly as soon as the 1965 portfolio appeared in LIFE, images from it were enlarged by right-to-life activists and pasted to placards.

Carter’s winning photo shows a heart-breaking scene of a starving child collapsed on the ground, struggling to get to a food center during a famine in the Sudan in 1993. In the background, a vulture stalks the emaciated child.
Carter was part of a group of four fearless photojournalists known as the “Bang Bang Club” who traveled throughout South Africa capturing the atrocities committed during apartheid.
Haunted by the horrific images from Sudan, Carter committed suicide in 1994 soon after receiving the award.

Glade is a RAD tool to enable quick & easy development of user interfaces for the GTK+ toolkit and the GNOME desktop environment, released under the GNU GPL License.

The user interfaces designed in Glade are saved as XML, and by using the libglade library these can be loaded by applications dynamically as needed. The GTK+ library provides an extensive collection of user interface building blocks such as text boxes, dialog labels, numeric entries, check boxes, and menus. These building blocks are called widgets. You can use Glade to place widgets in a GUI. Glade allows you to modify the layout and properties of these widgets. You can also use Glade to add connections between widgets and application source code.

By using libglade, Glade XML files can be used in numerous programming languages including C, C++, Java, Perl, Python, C#, Pike, Ruby, Haskell, Objective Caml and Scheme. Adding support for other languages is easy too.

Recently, few days back i wanted to do some server side programming for which i wished someone could allow me to use his system. I approached one of my friend asking for some room in his hard disk, annoyed was he, suggested virtual machines to be the best solution.

So, what is virtual machine? Ans:Virtual machine is an efficient, isolated duplicate of a real machine. And VirtualBox is a graphical tool to implement virtual machine. So VirtualBox is a general-purpose full virtualizer for x86 hardware. What a virtualizer does is allows an unmodified operating system with all of its installed software to run in a special environment, on top of your existing operating system. This environment, called a “virtual machine”, is created by the virtualization software by intercepting access to certain hardware components and certain features. The physical computer is then usually called the “host”, while the virtual machine is often called a “guest”. Most of the guest code runs unmodified, directly on the host computer, and the guest operating system “thinks” it’s running on real machine. And the best part of it is Open Source Software.

And now i needed to make a choice for the operating system which would present virtually on my current OS (Ubuntu, Hardy). So i chose Damn Small Linux as the best suited OS for this purpose as it is defined as :

Small Linux is a very versatile 50MB mini desktop oriented Linux distribution.

DSL was originally developed as an experiment to see how many usable desktop applications can fit inside a 50MB live CD. It was at first just a personal tool/toy. But over time Damn Small Linux grew into a community project with hundreds of development hours put into refinements including a fully automated remote and local application installation system and a very versatile backup and restore system which may be used with any writable media including a hard drive, a floppy drive, or a USB device.

All applications are chosen with the best balance of functionality, size and speed. Damn Small also has the ability to act as an SSH/FTP/HTTPD server right off of a live CD.And this was what i was looking for. The ip of your virtual os is different from the real os. This makes it a totally different system ( ofcourse virtually ).

It also has additional features like XMMS (MP3, CD Music, and MPEG), FTP client, Dillo web browser, Netrik web browser, FireFox, spreadsheet, Sylpheed email, spellcheck (US English), a word-processor (Ted), three editors (Beaver, Vim, and Nano [Pico clone]), graphics editing and viewing (Xpaint, and xzgv), Xpdf (PDF Viewer), emelFM (file manager), Naim (AIM, ICQ, IRC), VNCviwer, Rdesktop, SSH/SCP server and client, DHCP client, PPP, PPPoE (ADSL), a web server, calculator, generic and GhostScript printer support, NFS, Fluxbox and JWM window managers, games, system monitoring apps, a host of command line tools, USB support, and pcmcia support, some wireless support.

Damn Small Linux can also be installed on your system and its requirements would amaze you.

Minimum Requirements (non-graphical Linux)

486dx or 100% compatible processor

8mb ram (16mb recommended)

CDROM drive

1.44mb floppy drive (for boot floppy, if needed)

Monochrome (2 color) monitor

Minimum Requirements for DSL with X-window

486dx or 100% compatible processor

16mb ram (24mb recommended)

dual-speed CDROM (quad-speed or better recommended)

1.44mb floppy drive (for boot floppy, if needed)

VGA monitor and video card

a mouse (serial, ps/2, usb)

So isn’t this liner just meant for it?

Get it up, keep it up… LINUX: Viagra for the PC

Many of you must be using firefox as your default web browesr, if not hurry switch to firefox. Firefox to many looks no different than other browsers. But the fact that many are unaware of it being highly customizable. It is “about:config” this that makes it highly customizable. It is this command that opens up a world of obscure preferences that can be used to tweak the default setup. Like Linux it is Open to all.

The special string about:config, which can be typed in the Firefox Location bar where the addresses of Web sites are entered. You will see its features enumerated in alphabetical order. To narrow down the hundreds of configuration preferences to just the few you need, type a search term into the Filter: bar. To edit the preferences, double click on the name and you’ll be asked to enter the value. If double click on the boolean value it will toggle ( true to false or vice-versa )

Not every changes take effect immediately, you may need to restart you firefox.

There are many changes you can make to it but at your own risk . I will show you some tweaks to enhance the performance:

Starts rendering faster:

On the filter you type nglayout.initialpaint.delay. This features deals in rendering pages. Its default value is set to 250 and you may change it to 0. This determines how long Firefox waits before starting to render a page.

Maximize connections to multiple servers:

You now type network.http.max-connections. By default, this is set to 24, which should work well for most network connections, but you can raise it to 32 and see if that has any effect.many simultaneous network connections Firefox will make at any one time to any number of Web servers.

Maximize connections to the same server:

You now type network.http.max-connections-per-server .By default, this is set to 8 you may change it to 16.

Turn on pipelining:

You now type network.http.pipelining.It has a boolean value (true or false). This feature speeds up loading of web pages. It uses the technique of pipelining which sends multiple requests at once without waiting for servers response.
If you turn this on (that is, set its value to true), also be sure to create or edit the integer preference network.http.pipelining.maxrequests, which controls the maximum number of requests that can be pipelined at once. 16 should do it; some people go as high as 128 but there’s not much evidence it’ll help. (If you use a proxy, set network.http.proxy.pipelining to true as well.)
